Project overview

ReCentre is a wearable and mobile app I developed with a team of business, arts, and engineering students for an entrepreneurship class.

Objective

Create a stress management solution to address the need for support and self-help mental health resources we identified from interviewing psychologists, counselling professionals, and over 100 young adults.

My role

I was elected as the team's project manager. I guided the team to define goals and strategies, and I organized meetings, interviews, resources, timelines, and deliverables. I also did graphic design, copywriting, presentations, and pitches.

Results

Prototyped a wearable that detects and logs stress levels and provides timely, relevant coping strategies via a mobile app. Gained interest from a counselling professional and a UBC research lab to trial ReCentre.

ReCentre

Take control of your stress.
Live your best life.

How it works:

  • ReCentre tracks and analyzes physiological symptoms of stress
  • Stress levels are reported to the user through the ReCentre mobile app
  • The app provides timely and relevant coping strategies

ReCentre is designed to fit seamlessly with existing wearables, such as the Fitbit or Apple Watch, so that users can track their physical and mental health simultaneously. The wearable comes in two models: an independent wristband, and a strap that can replace a regular Apple Watch or Fitbit band.

I created ReCentre's logo and wearable design graphics.

ReCentre app mockups created by Angel Wen, a team member.

The ReCentre mobile app charts the user’s stress levels throughout the day and compares them to calendar events, times, and locations. This helps the user identify which activities are a source of tension.

ReCentre also displays stress trends, allowing the user to track their progress over time. This product can be used in conjunction with therapy or counseling to increase the user’s awareness of stress triggers and help develop coping strategies.

ReCentre draws from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques and the biopsychosocial model of mental health to provide coping resources. When a user is experiencing high levels of stress, the mobile app will send the user a notification offering stress management resources, such as:

  • Guided journaling that walks the user through the process of recognizing their emotions, identifying and challenging negative or distorted thoughts, and problem-solving for difficult situations.
  • Breathing, meditation, and grounding exercises to help the user relax in the moment.
  • The option to call or text contacts set by the user so they can get support from someone they trust.

Results

By the end of this eight-month project, my team had assembled a prototype sensor for detecting physical symptoms of stress. We also had a counselling professional and research lab at UBC interested in trialling ReCentre for use in their work.
